You need to read each poem twice. The characters have a lot to go though, kind of like growing up. Ironically, she returns often to the theme of finding abundance in life through the process of surrender. Everytime he turns around, there's always something threatening to shake up his world. I've read all of Donna Leon's Commissario Guido Brunetti mysteries and "The Waters of Eternal Youth" has one of the most pitiful victims, nastiest villains, and most satisfying endings in this rich, evocative series about life and death in Venice. This world is not our true home, and as a result we should not want to be a part of it. Following an introduction providing background and history, the book proceeds with a collection of short essays (2-3 pages) on a wide range of subjects, but all relating either to (1) issues and currents within Israeli society, (2) the Israel-Arab conflict, or (3) the state of Israel and its relations with other countries, particularly Europe. The author brings together thousands of pieces of the puzzle as well as much careful research, and in the end we have a vivid idea of how and why the two women were murdered, why the one woman who managed to survive couldn't possibly have been the "secret" murderer as portrayed in the novel, and most importantly, we get a concise idea of what kind of man the murderer Louis Wagner really was. But other than that the flashbacks went along well with the story.
